UK mountains and rivers: Ben Nevis, the Severn and more: what children learn
The curriculum asks children to name and locate the UK’s key topographical features, including hills, mountains, coasts and rivers. This game focuses on the stars of the map: the tallest mountain in each of the four countries and the UK’s longest rivers. Ben Nevis in Scotland (1,345 m) is the tallest mountain in the UK, followed by Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) in Wales (1,085 m), Scafell Pike in England (978 m) and Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland (850 m).
The River Severn is the UK’s longest river at 354 km. It rises in the mountains of mid-Wales and flows through England to the Bristol Channel. The River Thames, which flows through London, is the second longest at 346 km. Scotland’s longest river is the Tay and Northern Ireland’s is the Bann. A common mix-up is thinking the Thames is the longest, because it is the most famous.
This topic covers a Key Stage 2 statutory requirement in the National Curriculum in England (Locational knowledge): pupils should be taught to “name and locate counties and cities of the United Kingdom, geographical regions and their identifying human and physical characteristics, key topographical features (including hills, mountains, coasts and rivers), and land-use patterns; and understand how some of these aspects have changed over time”. The programme of study sets this for the whole of Key Stage 2, so schools choose when to teach it; we have placed this game in Year 5 (ages 9–10).
There is no direct equivalent in the US Common Core State Standards.
How to play
Answer 10 questions before the clock runs out. Tap an answer, or press 1 to 4. Each game has 10 multiple-choice questions and a 150-second timer. A wrong answer shows the correct one before moving on. You earn up to three stars depending on your score.
Step by step
- Learn the four peaks. One tallest mountain for each country: Ben Nevis, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Scafell Pike and Slieve Donard.
- Order them by height. Scotland, Wales, England, Northern Ireland: tallest to shortest.
- Follow a river. Trace the Severn from its source in Wales to its mouth in the Bristol Channel.
- Use river words. Source (where a river starts), mouth (where it meets the sea), tributary and estuary.
- Spot the pattern. Most of the UK’s high mountains are in the north and west; the south and east are lower and flatter.
Worked examples
Example 1: Which is the tallest mountain in England?
Working: England’s highest land is in the Lake District, in Cumbria.
Answer: Scafell Pike.
Example 2: Which is the longest river in the UK?
Working: The Thames is famous, but the Severn is 8 km longer.
Answer: The River Severn.
Example 3: In which country does the River Severn start?
Working: Its source is at Pumlumon (Plynlimon) in mid-Wales.
Answer: Wales.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Thinking the Thames is the UK’s longest river. The Severn (354 km) is longer than the Thames (346 km). The Thames is the longest river entirely in England.
- Putting Snowdon in England. Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is in north Wales, in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park.
- Thinking Ben Nevis is very tall by world standards. It is the UK’s highest, but Mount Everest is more than six times taller. Comparing helps with scale.
Activities to try at home
- Find the four tallest mountains on a UK map and plan which one you would like to visit.
- Look for the nearest river to your home and find out where it starts and ends.
- Watch the weather forecast and spot the mountain areas on the map.
- Print the worksheet and draw a bar chart of the four mountain heights.
Ideas for the classroom
- Plot the mountains and rivers on a UK outline and add heights and lengths.
- Make a bar chart comparing the four tallest peaks (maths link).
- Use an Ordnance Survey map extract to find contour lines on a hill near school.
- Play the game as a starter and ask pupils to locate each answer in an atlas.
Free printable game and worksheet
The free printable starts with a game sheet, such as a colour-by-answer picture, an answer maze or a secret-code joke, followed by a worksheet. Both use the same checked questions as the online game, and the answers are on the last page. Print it, or save it as a PDF from your browser’s print menu.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the game say Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)?
Yr Wyddfa is the Welsh name, and since 2022 the national park uses it as the main name. Many people still say Snowdon, so the game shows both.
Is the Severn longer than the Shannon?
The River Shannon in the Republic of Ireland is longer, but it is not in the UK. The Severn is the longest river in the UK and in Great Britain.
Are heights ever updated?
Yes. In 2016 Ordnance Survey re-measured Ben Nevis and rounded its height up to 1,345 metres.
