What children learn in Year 5 geography

Year 5 geography often focuses on physical geography: rivers, mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes, and the water cycle. Children name and locate the UK’s key topographical features and learn river vocabulary such as source and mouth.

They use Ordnance Survey maps, grid references and fieldwork to study real places.

Key goals for Year 5 include:

  • name the tallest mountain in each UK country
  • name the UK’s longest rivers
  • use words such as source, mouth and tributary

US equivalent: Year 5 pupils are about the age of Grade 4. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
