What children learn in Year 6 science

Year 6 science includes classifying living things, the circulatory system, evolution and inheritance, light and electricity. Children learn how scientists group living things by their characteristics and use classification keys.

They classify animals as vertebrates and invertebrates and sort them into smaller groups such as insects, arachnids and mammals.

Key goals for Year 6 include:

  • classify animals as vertebrates or invertebrates
  • sort invertebrates into insects, arachnids, molluscs and crustaceans
  • give reasons for classifying living things

US equivalent: Year 6 pupils are about the age of Grade 5. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
