What children learn in Year 3 science

In Year 3, science moves into Key Stage 2 and children start to plan simple investigations. Topics include plants, animals including humans, rocks, light, and forces and magnets.

Children test which materials are attracted to a magnet and discover that only some metals, mainly iron and steel, are magnetic.

Key goals for Year 3 include:

  • sort materials into magnetic and non-magnetic
  • name some magnetic materials
  • explain that not all metals are magnetic

US equivalent: Year 3 pupils are about the age of Grade 2. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
