What children learn in Year 2 science

Year 2 science looks at living things and where they live. Children learn that habitats provide what plants and animals need, explore microhabitats such as the space under a log, and use simple food chains to show how animals get their food.

They also compare materials for different jobs and watch how plants grow from seeds and bulbs.

Key goals for Year 2 include:

  • match animals to habitats and microhabitats
  • build a simple food chain that starts with a plant
  • explain that animals get food from plants and other animals

US equivalent: Year 2 pupils are about the age of Grade 1. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
