What children learn in Year 1 science
In Year 1 science, children observe the world around them closely. They name common plants and animals, sort animals into groups such as birds and mammals, and learn about the parts of plants, including trees.
They also explore everyday materials, learning the difference between an object and the material it is made from, and describing simple properties such as hard, soft, bendy and see-through.
Key goals for Year 1 include:
- name and sort common animals into fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals
- name the basic parts of a flowering plant and a tree
- say what an everyday object is made of
US equivalent: Year 1 pupils are about the age of Kindergarten. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
