What children learn in Year 6 maths

Year 6 is the final year of primary school, usually for children aged 10 to 11, and ends with the Key Stage 2 national tests (SATs) in May. By the end of Year 6, pupils should be fluent in written methods for all four operations, including long multiplication and division, and in working with fractions, decimals and percentages.

Pupils use the order of operations, find common factors and multiples, and work with numbers up to 10,000,000. Fractions work covers simplifying, adding fractions with different denominators, multiplying and dividing fractions, and recalling fraction, decimal and percentage equivalences.

New areas are introduced: ratio and proportion (including percentages of amounts and scale factors), and algebra (simple formulae, sequences and missing number problems). Measurement covers area of triangles and parallelograms and volume, and statistics includes pie charts and the mean.

Key goals for Year 6 include:

  • Use the order of operations correctly
  • Recall fraction, decimal and percentage equivalents
  • Calculate percentages of amounts
  • Simplify fractions using common factors
