What children learn in Year 5 maths

Year 5 is the first year of upper Key Stage 2, usually for children aged 9 to 10. The focus is on extending the number system to larger numbers and connecting multiplication and division with fractions, decimals and percentages.

Pupils read and order numbers to 1,000,000, round to the nearest 100,000, use negative numbers in context and read Roman numerals to 1,000. They learn about factors, multiples, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers, use long multiplication and short division, and multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1,000.

Fraction work includes improper fractions and mixed numbers, decimals to three places, and the meaning of per cent. Measurement covers area of rectangles, volume, unit conversions, and angles measured in degrees.

Key goals for Year 5 include:

  • Know the primes up to 19 and test numbers up to 100
  • Recognise square and cube numbers
  • Read, order and round numbers up to 1,000,000
  • Compare decimals with up to three decimal places
