What children learn in Year 3 geography

Key Stage 2 geography widens children’s view to the United Kingdom, Europe and the Americas. In Year 3, many schools introduce the eight points of a compass, map symbols and keys, and cities and regions of the UK.

Children use atlases and digital maps to locate places and describe where they are.

Key goals for Year 3 include:

  • use the eight points of a compass
  • say which UK country a city is in
  • use a map key and symbols

US equivalent: Year 3 pupils are about the age of Grade 2. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
