What children learn in Year 2 geography

In Year 2, children learn the four countries of the United Kingdom, their capital cities and the seas around them. They use geographical words to describe physical features, such as hills and rivers, and human features, such as towns and ports.

They compare a small area of the UK with a contrasting place outside Europe.

Key goals for Year 2 include:

  • name the four countries of the UK and their capitals
  • name the seas around the UK
  • sort features into physical and human

US equivalent: Year 2 pupils are about the age of Grade 1. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
