What children learn in Year 4 English
Year 4 English helps children make their writing more interesting and precise. They learn to use fronted adverbials, such as “Later that day,” to vary how sentences begin, with a comma after them.
Children also use possessive apostrophes with plural nouns (the girls’ names), punctuate direct speech with inverted commas and use expanded noun phrases. Standard English verb forms, such as “we were” instead of “we was”, are part of the Year 4 grammar content.
Key goals for Year 4 include:
- use fronted adverbials followed by a comma
- punctuate direct speech correctly
- use apostrophes for plural possession
- choose nouns and pronouns to avoid repetition
