What children learn in Year 1 computing
Computing in Key Stage 1 is taught across Years 1 and 2. In Year 1, children learn what algorithms are: clear steps in the right order. They give instructions to each other and to floor robots, and spot and fix mistakes.
They also start to use technology safely and to tell a trusted adult if something online worries them.
Key goals for Year 1 include:
- explain that an algorithm is a set of steps in order
- put the steps of a simple task in order
- program a floor robot to follow a route
US equivalent: Year 1 pupils are about the age of Kindergarten. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
